Appointment to the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene

The Government announced today (April 11) the appointment of Professor Yuen Kwok-yung, JP, to succeed Dr Daniel Tse Chi-wai, GBS, JP, as the Chairman of the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene.

The appointment was made by the Chief Executive and Professor Yuen will serve a term of two years with effect from April 1, 2003.

Professor Yuen is the Chair Professor of Infectious Disease and Head of Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong. He specialises in clinical microbiology and is one of the most renowned academics on matters relating to food safety, zoonotic and infectious disease.

The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, welcomed the appointment of Professor Yuen as the new Chairman. He said that Professor Yuen's experience and expertise made him most suitable for the Chairmanship.

Dr Yeoh also paid tribute to the out-going Chairman, Dr Daniel Tse Chi-wai, for his exemplary service. Under his leadership, the Advisory Council had made significant contributions to the Administration's efforts in protecting food safety and improving environmental hygiene.

The Chief Executive also appointed six new members to the Advisory Council.

The Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene, as from April 1, 2003, comprises 15 non-official members and four ex-officio members. The new membership list as follows:
