Appointment and re-appointment of Elderly Commission Members

The Government today (July 31) announced the appointment of two new members and re-appointment of six incumbent members to the Elderly Commission (EC). The appointments, which took effect from July 30, 2003, will be published in the gazette tomorrow (August 1).

The two new members appointed to the EC for an initial term of two years are Mr Star Chan Iu-seng and Dr Lam Ching-choi.

Mr Chan is a businessman with deep interest in public service, including social welfare. He was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yan Chai Hospital in 2002-03.

Dr Lam has been actively involved in services for elders, including elderly day and residential care services, elder housing cum care services, prevention and handling of elder abuse, etc.

The six incumbent members who have been re-appointed are the Hon Tam Yiu-chung (the Chairman), Prof Iris Chi, Mrs Peggy Lam Pei Yu-dja, Dr Susie Lum Shun-sui, Mr Wan Man-yee and Dr Raymond Wu Wai-yung.

Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, welcomed the new appointment and re-appointment of members and said he would look forward to their contribution to the development of elderly services in Hong Kong.

Dr Yeoh also expressed gratitude to Dr Shum Ping-shiu, who has retired from the EC when his term of office expired on July 30, 2003. Dr Shum has served on the EC for six years and tendered expert advice and made valuable contributions to its work.
