SHWF discusses market operation with stall tenants

The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, today (August 14) toured around Luen Wo Hui Market in Fanling and Kwong Yuen Estate Market in Sha Tin to discuss with stall tenants their operation environment and listened to their views on the management of the markets.

The new Luen Wo Hui Market was opened in 2002 after a redevelopment project of the 50-year-old market. In the current financial year, the Government has earmarked over $300 million for improvement works to some 30 Food and Environmental Hygiene Department markets.

"Improvement works will include upgrading of ventilation and drainage systems, replacement of floor and wall finishes, lighting improvements and escalators. Such works is aimed at upgrading the hygiene standard, food safety and operating environment of markets.

"We shall continue to listen to views of the tenants and consumers in proceeding with the improvement works," he said.

Dr Yeoh also met representatives of Health Inspectors, Hawker Control Team, cleansing staff and Pest Control staff in the Luen Wo Hui Complex, North District.

He discussed with enforcement officers the implementation issues of the increased fixed penalty for public cleanliness offences since June this year and expressed appreciation for the active participation of cleansing and Pest Control staff in the fight against SARS.
