Response on trading activities of live marine fish at Aberdeen promenade

< Back

In response to media enquiries on the trading activities of live marine fish at the Aberdeen promenade, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau said today (September 3) that the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will conduct inspections and collect water samples for laboratory tests from the stalls at the Aberdeen promenade.

"Once the presence of highly infectious cholera bacteria is detected, the Department will close the concerned premises on health hazard grounds under the authority conferred by section 128C of the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Cap 132)," the spokesman said.

"The Government recognises that there is no room for complacency in ensuring that edible live marine fish offered for sale in markets, supermarkets and fresh provision shops is fit for human consumption," he added.

The spokesman also noted that the traders of live fish had made unauthorised use of government land at the Aberdeen promenade for years. He said the Administration would give careful consideration to this problem and consult the trade and the local community on the best way forward.
