FMO to manage Aberdeen live fish wholesale market

< Back

To protect public health and ensure food safety, the Government will expedite the taking over of management of the live fish wholesale market at the carpark of the Aberdeen promenade, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau said today (November 13).

"Under the management of the Fish Marketing Organisation (FMO), the incumbent wholesalers will be required to operate under a hygienic environment, including the use of hygienic seawater. Anyone who fails to comply with FMO's requirements will not be allowed to operate in the FMO-managed market," the spokesman added.

The move followed the recent discovery of vibrio cholerae at one of the wholesale stalls in the market last week that the Government decided to expedite the process that would enable the FMO to take over the management responsibility of the site.

"The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department is now working very closely with the FMO with a view to taking over the site on December 1.

"All relevant government departments have pledged their full support in speeding up the process for land allocation and are working expeditiously towards the specific timeframe.

"The Government will continue to take enforcement and appropriate actions to protect public health and ensure food safety," the spokesman said.
