Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food to visit Beijing

Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong will visit Beijing next week to strengthen ties with the relevant Mainland authorities.

Dr Yeoh will depart for Beijing on Sunday (November 16) and return to Hong Kong on Tuesday (November 18).

While in Beijing, he will call on the leaders of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office under the State Council; State General Administration on Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ); Ministry of Health; Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Commerce. 

He will discuss with AQSIQ and other Mainland counterparts a wide range of issues concerning port health control measures, the inspection and quarantine of food, live food animals, plants and animal products to ensure food safety, protect public health and enhance the state of preparedness on both sides in the control of communicable diseases in winter. He will also visit a designated SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) hospital during his stay in Beijing.

Accompanying the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food on the visit will be the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Thomas Chan; the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Gregory Leung; and the Director of Health, Dr Lam Ping-yan. The Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Mrs Carrie Yau, will join the delegation on Tuesday.
