< Back

The Government announced today (January 14) the appointment of two new members and the re-appointment of an incumbent member to the Women's Commission.

The appointments, which will take effect from January 15, 2005, have been published in the gazette today.

The two new members, appointed for a three-year tenure, are Mrs Joanna Li Lau Lai-hing and Dr Yeung Ka-ching. The incumbent member who has been re-appointed for two years is Ms Ophelia Cheung Look-ping.

Coming from different backgrounds, the new and re-appointed members possess profound knowledge and extensive experience from their professions, including legal, academic and public relations, and would strengthen the work of the Women's Commission on various fronts.

Speaking on the appointments, the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, said, "Under the leadership of Mrs Sophie Leung Lau Yau-fun, the Women's Commission has laid a solid foundation over the past four years. With the contribution of the new and re-appointed members, the Women's Commission would continue to play a catalytic role in championing women's interests and mobilising various sectors for the development and advancement of women."

Dr Chow also expressed gratitude to the two outgoing members, Ms Cordelia Chung and Mr Maurice Lee Wai-man, for their valuable contribution to the work of the Women's Commission.

The Women's Commission was set up on January 15, 2001 as a high-level central body that takes a strategic overview of women's issues. Comprising 18 non-official members and four ex-officio members, it plays a strategic role in advising Government on the integration of policies and initiatives that are of concern to women.
