< Back

In response to press enquiries about a press report that the Government is considering imposing a fixed penalty of $1,500 on those who contravene the smoking ordinance, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau today (April 20) clarifies as follows:

"Under the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance, any person who contravenes section 3 of the ordinance (in respect of smoking in no smoking areas) commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $5,000. There is no plan to change such provision at the moment."
