A Hong Kong delegation yesterday (September 29, Washington time) visited the Centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) in Washington DC, US, as part of a fact-finding trip to gather more information about the food safety regulatory structure in other countries with a view to developing a suitable model for Hong Kong.

The delegation comprised the Deputy Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Mr Eddy Chan; the Deputy Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Dr Mak Sin-ping; and Principal Assistant Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Miss Vivian Ko.

They were briefed by the Director of the Office of Regulations and Policy, Dr Leslye Fraser, on the responsibility and operations of the centre. They also met with the centre's Director of Office of Science, Dr Robert Buchanan; and Risk Assessment Coordinator, Dr Sherri Dennis.

CFSAN is a government body formed under the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

The Hong Kong delegation learned that the policy and executive responsibility in respect of food safety, excluding meat and poultry products and egg products, rested with the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

The delegation also visited the United States Department of Agriculture which was responsible for the safety of meat, poultry and egg products.
