Appointments to Social Welfare Advisory Committee

The Government announced today (November 25) the appointment of four new members and the re-appointment of four incumbent members to the Social Welfare Advisory Committee (SWAC). All the appointments are for a term of two years with effect from December 1 this year.

The four new members are: Prof Japhet Sebastian Law; Mr Timothy Ma Kam-wah, Prof Tang Kwong-leung; and Dr Jimmy Wong Chi-ho.

Prof Law is the professor of Department of Decision Science and Managerial Economic of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. As the chairman of a non-subvented agency, he is familiar with the welfare sector. He is also serving on the Air Transport Licensing Authority.

Mr Ma is the executive director of a non-subvented welfare agency. He is familiar with the welfare sector and serving on the Guardianship Board under the Social Welfare Department.

Prof Tang is the professor and chair of Social Work Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has both frontline and academic experience in the welfare field and has provided useful advice to the Social Welfare Department on various matters.

Dr Wong is the president of Tung Chun Group. He is very active in the social service field and has served as the chairman and vice-chairman of various major welfare agencies. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged.

Meanwhile, four incumbent members have been re-appointed. They are: Dr Miranda Chung Chan Lai-foon, Ms Christine Fang Meng-sang, Ms Marina Wong Yu-pok, and Mr Silva Yeung Tak-wah.

The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, welcomed the appointment of the new members and the re-appointment of the incumbent members. He looked forward to their contribution to the development of welfare policy issues.

Dr Chow also thanked the four outgoing members �V Dr Joe Leung Cho-bun, Prof Diana Mak Ping-see, Mr Aaron Wan Chi-keung, and Ms Jessie Yu Sau-chu - for their valuable advice to the SWAC during their term of appointment.

The functions of the SWAC are to keep social welfare services under continuous review, and to advise the Government on all matters of social welfare policy.
