HWFB on genetically modified food
In response to the allegation of locally available food containing genetically
modified components, a spokesman for Health, Welfare and Food Bureau today
(April 7) reiterated that all food for sale in Hong Kong must be wholesome, safe
and fit for human consumption.
This principle also applied to genetically modified food, the spokesman said.
"We will meet with the company concerned to understand more about the products
alleged to contain genetically modified components.
"As there is at present no international consensus on the labelling of
genetically modified food, the Government will need to engage the trade and
other stakeholders and consult them before coming to any conclusion on whether
there should be mandatory labelling requirement for genetically modified food.
"We will also develop, in consultation with the trade, a set of voluntary
labelling guidelines to help the trade make proper genetically modified claims,"
the spokesman added.
