Elderly Commission organises pre-retirement workshop (with photo)
The following is issued on behalf of the Elderly Commission:
The Elderly Commission (EC) and the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau today
(September 30) co-organised a pre-retirement workshop at the Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Centre. At the workshop, eight representatives coming
from the business sector, the Government and non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) shared with more than 100 participants their views on issues to be aware
of after retirement and their experience in planning for retirement. Four
retirees and soon to be retirees had also shared their opinion on retirement and
retirement planning.
Speaking at the workshop, the EC Chairman, Dr Leong Che-hung, said the EC hoped
enterprises could through this workshop realise the need to make pre-retirement
preparation for their staff and assist them to adapt to retirement
psychologically and socially.
He said the workshop provided a good opportunity for enterprises, the Government
and NGOs to get together to explore the roles of different parties, study ways
to foster a caring culture, and to better utilise the rich experience and
knowledge of retired employees.
The Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food (Health and Welfare), Ms
Sandra Lee, said everyone should plan for each stage of his/her own life, with
no exception to retirement. She also said most soon to be retirees in Hong Kong
were psychologically and physically fit, after retirement they could spend more
time participating in social activities, developing hobbies, learning new things
and with their families. In short, they entered into a new chapter of life -
Active Ageing.
General Manager and Head of Retirement Benefits of HSBC Insurance (Asia-Pacific)
Holdings Ltd, Ms Luzia Hung, shared the findings of a global survey commissioned
by the group on retirement. Group Human Resources Manager of CLP Holdings Ltd,
Mr KT Lai, and Head of Human Resources of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, Mrs Anna
Lo, also briefed the participants their pre-retirement activities for the staff.
Other speakers in the workshop were Assistant Director of Social Welfare, Mrs
Kathy Ng; Assistant Director of Health, Dr Chan Wai-man; and Clinical
Psychologist of the Department of Health, Miss Zion Law, who suggested ways to
live an active retirement life. Senior Manager of the Hong Kong Society for the
Aged, Ms Leung Yin-yin, and Manager of St James Settlement, Mr Daniel Doo,
introduced supporting services for retirement preparation.
