Press Releases
SHWF on Dr Margaret Chan nominated as the next Director-General of WHO
Following is a transcript of the remarks (English portion) by the Secretary for
Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, at a stand-up media session at the lobby
of Murray Building, Central today (November 8):
Dr Chow: We're happy to announce that Dr Margaret Chan has been elected as the
nominee for the Director-General of the World Health Organisation. In the last
round of the voting, we have 24 votes, which is a very high number of votes. It
shows that we have the ability and the influence, and the support of the
Executive Committee of the WHO. We are very honoured and also proud of the
National Government in supporting her. This also shows the strength of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the Ministry of Health of China. We hope
that her nomination will be endorsed by the World Health Assembly tomorrow so
that we can formally thank her and congratulate her.
(Please also refer to the Chinese portion of the transcript.)
