HKSARG congratulates Dr Margaret Chan on her election as WHO Director-General
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) extends its
heartiest congratulations to Dr Margaret Chan following the endorsement by the
World Health Assembly of her nomination as the Director-General of the World
Health Organisation (WHO), stating that with Dr Chan's calibre, vision and
wealth of experience in public health issues, she will be an outstanding
Director-General.
Upon receiving the news, the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, who is now on a
visit in Europe, said Dr Chan was the first Chinese elected as the
Director-General of the WHO, adding that it was a great honour for the nation
and for the people of Hong Kong.
The Acting Chief Executive, Mr Rafael Hui, noted that Dr Chan had been elected
with overwhelming support. He said this reflected the wide recognition of Dr
Chan by all the voting countries. This also reflected the recognition of her
professionalism.
The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, said the WHO was an
important international organisation that safeguarded the health of all. The
WHO's work was closely related to the well-being of all global citizens. He
added that the HKSARG would continue to work closely with the WHO and
participate actively in global endeavours to combat diseases and improve global
health.
Dr Chan was nominated as the next Director-General by the WHO Executive Board
yesterday (November 8) and her appointment was confirmed at the World Health
Assembly meeting today.
