Further information on duck eggs with Sudan dyes
A spokesman of the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau said that according to a
report received from the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) this (November 21)
afternoon, although the duck eggs from Hubei Shendan Healthy Food Co. Ltd (the
Company) which were found to contain Sudan dyes were not exported to Hong Kong,
a local department store had sold duck eggs from the Company during a food fair.
However, these duck eggs were not from the same batch found to contain Sudan
dyes in the Mainland.
The spokesman confirmed that about 2,250 duck eggs produced by the Company were
available for sale during a food fair organised by the Yue Hwa Chinese Products
Emporium Limited in mid October this year. Some 1,000 eggs had been sold and the
remaining were all surrendered to CFS.
As a precautionary measure, the CFS has taken samples from the eggs concerned
for testing. Results will be available tomorrow, the spokesman said.
The CFS has also been informed tonight by the General Administration of Quality
Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine that eight batches of duck eggs from
seven enterprises were found to contain Sudan dyes. (Please refer to the Chinese
press release for names of the enterprises.)
Duck eggs from the seven enterprises have not been exported to Hong Kong. The
CFS will step up inspection to see if the duck eggs in question are sold in the
local market, the spokesman said.
"The CFS also advises the trade to stop selling the affected duck eggs from the
seven enterprises, he said.
