Government responds to Mainland live seafood supply to Hong Kong
In response to media enquiries on the suspension of Mainland live seafood supply
to Hong Kong, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau said today
(December 11) the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government
learnt from the Guangdong and Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine
Bureaux that Mainland authorities did not impose a ban on live seafood supply to
Hong Kong but had recently strengthened inspection to ensure food safety.
"The HKSAR Government contacted the Guangdong and Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection
and Quarantine Bureaux yesterday and this morning. We have obtained confirmation
from the Mainland authorities that they have not imposed any ban on live seafood
supply to Hong Kong," the spokesman said.
In view of the recent test results on seafood in Hong Kong, the spokesman said
the inspection and quarantine authorities on the Mainland had stepped up their
inspection on live seafood supply to Hong Kong.
The Mainland had always attached great importance to the safety of live seafood
supply to Hong Kong and the purpose of the strengthened inspection arrangement
was aimed at ensuring food safety for the public of Hong Kong.
"The Government will also work closely with all relevant departments to combat
fish products coming to Hong Kong from improper channels," the spokesman said.
