SHWF visits Central and Western District (with photos)

The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, visited Central and Western District today (February 2) to look at the various development projects in the district.

Accompanied by the Central and Western District Officer, Miss Eliza Yau, Dr Chow stopped over the Bridges Street Market managed by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) to see the operation of wet market stalls. He walked around Peel Street, Graham Street and Stanley Street, being briefed by Food and Environmental Health Department staff on the management of licensed fixed pitch hawker stalls and cooked food stalls, and the tackling of other environmental hygiene problems in the area.

Dr Chow stopped at some of the shops and stalls and chatted with the operators for their views on improvements to the environmental hygiene.

Noting that a redevelopment project by Urban Renewal Authority in the area would affect dozens of licensed fixed pitch hawker stalls, Dr Chow was told that the department would maintain liaison with the affected hawkers to allow for the smooth implementation of the project.

He also went to Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, which was converted from the historic structure of Kom Tong Hall. The two permanent exhibitions displaying a number of precious historical artifacts enabled Dr Chow to gain a more in-depth understanding of Dr Sun's close connections with Hong Kong.

Before ending his visit, Dr Chow met District Councillors to exchange views on health, welfare, food and environmental hygiene issues for further service improvements in the district.
