The Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food (Health and Welfare), Ms Sandra Lee, today (February 9) visited Shenzhen and met officials of the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. She also toured the temperature check facilities and emergency command system at Lo Wu checkpoint on the Shenzhen side.

On her arrival, Ms Lee met the Director General of the Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Mr Liu Shengli, to exchange views on the work of prevention of infectious diseases across the boundary and to forge closer ties and enhance co-operation between the two places.

At the invitation of the Shenzhen side, she visited the temperature check facilities, negative pressure isolation facilities and emergency command system at the Shenzhen checkpoint.

Ms Lee said the visit was arranged amid the influenza peak season to review the ability of both places to prevent the spread of diseases across the boundary. The governments of the two places have put in place effective disease surveillance systems to facilitate timely detection of diseases at the immigration control points.

"The Health, Welfare and Food Bureau will consult the Legislative Council Panel on Health Services on its proposed amendments to the Quarantine and Prevention of Disease Ordinance with a view to updating and enhancing our legislative framework for prevention and control of infectious diseases," she said.

Joining Ms Lee on the visit was Assistant Director of Health Dr Cindy Lai.
