More live chicken imports from the Mainland for Tuen Ng Festival
The daily quantity of live chicken imports from the Mainland would be further
increased to 56,000 to meet the surge in public demand for live chickens in the
two days preceding the Tuen Ng Festival (June 17 and 18).
The decision was made in response to the request from the poultry trade and
having assessed factors including public demand and risk management after
further discussion with the trade, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food
Bureau said today (June 15).
The number of chickens to be imported on June 19 will resume to the daily limit
of 20,000.
"The trade will strictly observe public health condition in the markets and
ensure that there is no overstocking of live chickens in the retail outlets,"
the spokesman said.
The bureau announced earlier this month that the daily imports of live chickens
from the Mainland would be temporarily increased from the current level of
20,000 to 50,000 from June 16 to 18 to meet holiday demand.
