Co-operation agreement on Chinese Medicine signed (With photo)
The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, today (November 23) signed a
co-operation agreement on Chinese medicine with the Vice-Minister of Health and
Director-General of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr
Wang Guoqiang, to foster co-operation and exchange between the Mainland and Hong
Kong in the development of Chinese medicine.
Dr Chow said that since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region (HKSAR), exchanges between Hong Kong and the Mainland over
Chinese medicine had become more frequent. In recent years, Hong Kong had
gradually implemented the registration of traditional Chinese medicine
practitioners, licensing of Chinese medicines traders and registration of
proprietary Chinese medicines. The support of the State Administration of
Traditional Chinese Medicine and the State Food and Drug Administration had
facilitated the smooth implementation of such regulatory measures.
"The signing of the cooperation agreement today is a key milestone of the
co-operation of the two places. I hope that in future the Mainland and Hong Kong
can work together for a more prosperous development of Chinese medicine," Dr
Chow said.
Under the agreement, the two parties will enhance co-operation in various areas,
including: the strategies for the development of Chinese medicine, Chinese
medicine policies and regulation, development of service interface between
Chinese and Western medicine, standards for Chinese medicine, training for
Chinese medicine practitioners, and hospital management and organisation of
promotional activities for Chinese medicine. To put into effect the co-operation
agreement, the two parties agreed to establish co-operation mechanism among
relevant departments, and to hold working meetings when necessary.
To strengthen co-operation, Hong Kong would launch a series of programmes under
the auspices of a nation-wide campaign called "Promotion of Traditional Chinese
Medicine in China". To be held from tomorrow (November 24) and December 31, the
Hong Kong programme will showcase Hong Kong's remarkable progress in the
development of Chinese medicine since the establishment of HKSAR. The campaign
also aims to enhance the public's understanding of the history and curative
effect of Chinese medicine.
