Funds Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases Research Priorities

Current Application Round

You may wish to note that grant applications addressing the following research priorities are preferred. Applications falling outside these priorities will still be considered although they will have a lower funding preference.

For the Application Round to be closed on 14 November 2011, emerging infectious diseases remain the primary focus of the RFCID. The thematic priorities of this open call are as follows (in order of importance):

 

Respiratory pathogens (including influenza)

  • Epidemiology (including mathematical modelling)
  • Diagnosis: rapid diagnostic tests
  • Novel control approaches
  • Economic burden of disease
  • Role of Chinese medicine in treatment/prevention of infectious disease
  • Measures to enhance vaccination of elderly, institutionalised or other at risk populations
   
 

Technology platforms for infectious disease

  • Application of modern technology to the control, treatment and prevention of infectious disease
  • Rapid diagnosis
  • Molecular epidemiology
  • Genome sequencing
  • Improved physical-chemical methods
  • Technology substitution/supplement for traditional pathogen typing methods
   
 

Emerging & zoonotic diseases

  • Characterise new pathogens in animals that can infect humans
  • Risk factors that contribute to the emergence of zoonotic disease
  • Development and evaluation of diagnostic tests for zoonotic disease
  • Surveillance methods for the emergence of zoonotic disease
  • Modelling to predict the risk of zoonotic disease
   
 

Antimicrobial resistance

  • Epidemiology of various multi-drug resistant organisms
  • Risk factors for harbouring (colonisation and infection) resistant organisms
  • Mechanisms of resistance and its transfer
  • Screening strategy for resistant organisms
  • Laboratory strategy for detection of multi-drug resistant organisms
  • Appropriate therapy for infection with resistant organisms
  • Optimal infection control measures for resistant organisms
