You may wish to note that grant applications addressing the following research priorities are preferred. Applications falling outside these priorities will still be considered although they will have a lower funding preference.
Thematic priorities for the Application Round to be closed on 14 November 2011 are:
Public health theme
Smoking
- Identification of factors and evaluation of methods to prevent the uptake of smoking by specific target groups
- Effectiveness of methods to encourage smokers to cease smoking
- Evaluation of tobacco control policies, in particular pre- and post-intervention studies
- Effectiveness of new media on publicity and smoking cessation interventions
Mental Health
- Effectiveness of treatment models, in particular those in a community setting
- Health needs assessment of the mentally ill and ex-mentally ill
- Risk factors for mental disorders and protective factors for mental well-being in Hong Kong
- Effectiveness of interventions to promote mental well-being
- Mental health literacy of the general public in Hong Kong
Injury and poisoning
- Identification of risk factors for injury and poisoning
- Effectiveness and efficacy of methods to prevent injury and poisoning
Alcohol-related harm
- Identification of factors that influence drinking behaviour
- Feasibility, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness of interventions to reduce alcohol-related harm
- Public health impact of alcohol tax change
Major non-communicable diseases (NCD), e.g. cancer, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular diseases
- Identification of factors that influence health behaviour (especially modifiable lifestyle factors, e.g. those leading to overweight & obesity)
- Effectiveness of strategies and interventions to tackle NCD, e.g. cancer, cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular diseases and their contributing risk factors
Environmental pollution
- Epidemiology of exposure to environmental pollutants
- Identification and quantification of environmental pollutants in the general population in Hong Kong
- Impact of environmental pollution on health

- The degree of adoption of the reference framework for hypertension and diabetes care in primary care settings and identification of the associated enabling factors and/or barriers

- Identification of ambulatory care sensitive conditions

- Effectiveness of programmes to reduce avoidable hospitalization
Chronic disease prevention and management
- Service delivery model for chronic disease management

Enhanced elderly care
- Identification of risk factors of dementia, especially Alzheimer's Disease
- Effectiveness of structured fall prevention programme to prevent fall for elderly population in the community
- Effectiveness of end-of-life programmes in residential care homes for the elderly
Health systems research
- Evaluating integrated and multidisciplinary approaches to health care delivery in Hong Kong
Chinese medicine theme
- Establishing safety profile of certain Chinese herbs and medicines
- Interactions between Chinese medicines and Western medicines
- Integrated approaches in combining Chinese and Western models of care
- Knowledge, attitude and practice or use of Chinese medicine in the community
