New Hospital Authority Chairman Appointed

The Government announced today (August 30) the appointment of Dr Leong Che-hung to succeed Dr Lo Ka-shui as the chairman of the Hosptial Authority.

Dr Leong will serve a term of two years with effect from October 1, 2002.

Dr Leong is a private medical practitioner specializing in urology. He is a dedicated founding member of the Hospital Authority and has made substantial contributions to the management reforms in public hospitals.

With extensive experience in public service, Dr Leong is currently the chairman of the Medical Services Development Committee of the Hospital Authority as well as the chairman of the Hospital Governing Committee of the Tuen Mun Hospital. He was an elected Legislative Council member of the medical functional constituency for more than ten years. Dr Leong is also the president of the Council of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and the chairperson of the Council on Human Reproductive Technology.

Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, today welcomed the appointment of Dr Leong as the new Chairman. He said Dr Leong's respectable status in the medical profession, wealth of experience in health care matters and thorough understanding of the Hospital Authority's operation made him eminently suitable for such an important post.

"I look forward to working closely with Dr Leong to improve the health care service and system in Hong Kong," said Dr Yeoh.

Dr Yeoh commended the out-going chairman, Dr Lo, for his strong leadership in steering the Hospital Authority through changes and challenges as well as his contributions in addressing the sustainability of the public health care system.

The Hospital Authority, as from October 1, 2002, will comprise a chairman, 20 non-official members, three public officers and one principal officer from the Hospital Authority. The new membership list is as follows:
