Appointments to the Social Welfare Advisory Committee

The Government announced today (November 29) the appointment of Mr Wilfred Wong Ying-wai as the new Chairman to the Social Welfare Advisory Committee (SWAC) for a period of two years with effect from December 1, 2002. 

Mr Wilfred Wong has been serving on the SWAC since December 2001. He has extensive experience in public service and has provided invaluable contribution to the Committee. Mr Wong is also serving on a number of advisory bodies including the Commission on Youth, the Public Service Commission, as well as the councils of two universities. 

Besides, two new members and five incumbent members have been appointed to the SWAC. The appointments and re-appointments will also take effect on December 1, 2002.

The two new members are Ms Vivien Chan and Mr Stephen Chow Chun-kay. Ms Chan is currently a member of the Fight Crime Committee, and Mr Chow is serving on the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Advisory Board. Both have long been actively engaged in community services. They have been appointed for two years.

Five incumbent members have been re-appointed to the Committee. Miss Deborah Wan Lai-yau and Mr Stephen Yau How-boa have been re-appointed for one year. Mrs Cheung Ang Siew-mei, Mr Keith Lam Hon-keung and Miss Dorothy Lau Wai-ling have been re-appointed for two years. They have all participated actively in the work of the Committee and made important contribution.

Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, thanked the outgoing Chairman for his leadership and outgoing members for their contribution to the work of the Committee during their terms of office. 

He also welcomed the appointment of the Chairman and the two new members, and the re-appointment of five incumbent members to the Committee. He looked forward to their contribution to the development of welfare services in Hong Kong. 

The functions of the SWAC are to keep social welfare services under continuous review, and to advise the Government on all policy issues relating to welfare development.
