HKSAR Delegation returned to Hong Kong after attending the "Tenth Anniversary Commemoration of the Fourth World Conference on Women"
A delegation from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) attended
the "Tenth Anniversary Commemoration of the Fourth World Conference on Women"
held on August 29 to September 1, 2005 at Beijing and returned today (September
2). The Conference attracted participants from around the world to exchange on
the theme "Towards Gender Equality and Common Development".
The 30-strong HKSAR delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary for Health,
Welfare and Food, Mrs Carrie Yau, attended the Conference including six thematic
workshops on "Women in Decision-making and Management", "Economic Empowerment of
Women", "Women's Human Rights and the Elimination of Violence against Women",
"Women and Sustainable Development", "Women and Poverty Eradication" and "Women
and HIV/AIDS". Members of the delegation also joined the visit to Huairou, where
the 1995 NGO Forum on Women was held.
The "Beijing Plus 10 Declaration: Solidarity for Gender Equality, Development
and Peace" was unanimously endorsed at the Conference. Delegates from all over
the world applauding the contributions of women in different aspects and
reaffirmed their commitments to the Beijing Declaration and the Beijing Platform
for Action. They also shared and exchanged experiences, achievements and
barriers in advancing the interests and status of women in their countries or
places over the past decade. They committed to continue to spare no efforts to
speed up the full and effective implementation of the Beijing Platform for
Action with a view to realising equality between women and men.
The HKSAR Government also took part in the "Exhibition on the Ten-Year Progress
and Development of Chinese Women" held between August 30 and September 4, 2005
at the Beijing Nationalities Cultural Palace to showcase the achievements made
in Hong Kong with the joint efforts of all sectors.
In September 1995, the United Nations convened in Beijing the "Fourth World
Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace", during which
the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were adopted. In 2005, the
"Tenth Anniversary Commemoration of the Fourth World Conference on Women" was
co-organised by the National Working Committee on Women and Children under the
State Council, the All-China Women's Federation, the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, and the United Nations Offices in China.
