SFH on cooked food bazaar

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending a public function today (December 5):

Reporter: The Government has finalised the arrangement of the Chinese New Year market in Sham Shui Po. Do you think the market will cater to the local population because there are reports about the limited number of food stalls that are going to be available at the event?

Secretary for Food and Health: The cooked food market to be run during the coming Chinese New Year in Sham Shui Po is actually a result of the efforts of proponents from the district as well as the District Council itself, so it is a very good example of a district-based initiative. The Government's role in this particular case is to facilitate the setting up of the market, especially in terms of facilities required for the market.

Reporter: With the limited number of food stalls, do you think it will help ...?

Secretary for Food and Health: I think we are providing a very good alternative for the operators of cooked food stalls. Of course it is ultimately up to them to decide whether they would like to join. I think there are merits for such alternative. If you put cooked food stalls of similar nature together, the attractiveness of these food stalls will be greater.
