A total of $6.75 million has been granted from the S.K. Yee Fund for the Disabled to 57 projects which will bring improvement to the mental or physical health and well-being of people with disabilities, a spokesman for Health and Welfare Bureau announced today (Sunday).

Major donations include $1.59 million for 12 cochlear implant devices for profoundly hearing impaired persons; $1.39 million for a mobile audiological assessment service centre; and about $3 million for various equipment and appliances, including air-conditioners for about 30 hostels and activity centre.

The Secretary for Health and Welfare, Mrs Katherine Fok, praised the trustees of the S.K. Yee Medical Foundation for their generous donation to people with disabilities and looked forward to their continued support in future years.

The spokesman said this was the second donation since the establishment of the Fund in 1998 with an objective to assist poor people with disabilities.

"A total sum of about $10 million was granted in the first two years of the Fund's operation," he added.

All grants are made on the recommendations of an assessment panel comprising the Commissioner for Rehabilitation and representatives from the Social Welfare and Education Departments.
