SFH on manpower arrangement of medical staff during influenza peak (with photos)

< Back

Following is the transcript of remarks (English portion) made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, after attending the spring gathering of the Hospital Authority this afternoon (February 11):

Reporter: How many medical staff have cancelled their holidays to cope with the flu peak season?

Secretary for Food and Health: I do not have the exact number. But usually during this particular Chinese New Year season, there is a contingency plan for such arrangement every year, particularly for the staff working in the departments of medicine, paediatrics and also the intensive care units. Most of them would not be allowed to take leave and, if possible, they will also encash part of the leave so that they have to work extra shifts just to ensure that there is sufficient manpower to look after patients. Each cluster and each hospital has slightly different arrangements due to their local situation.
