Acting SFH on organ donation

< Back

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Acting Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, after attending the 20th anniversary of lung transplant programme cum inauguration of lung transplant patient group today (December 12):

Reporter: A survey yesterday revealed that a large proportion of teenagers is still having a little understanding about organ donation. What's your view on that? Is there a lack of efforts in promoting it? And also, regarding the suggestion on incorporating an organ donation application form with ID registration, what's your comment on that?

Acting Secretary for Food and Health: Actually the Department of Health has always been trying to promote organ donation. There is a central registry started way back in 2008. Now there are over 180 000 people who have already registered. Of course this number, while it has a lot of room for improvement in comparison with other countries,?I think it is important for us to further publicise organ donation to the public. The Department of Health is actually doing this job and they will continue to do more public education and publicity.
