Chinese Medicine Clinical Services

Consultation

Chinese medicine (CM) practitioners usually diagnose patient with an analysis of signs, symptoms and information gained through four diagnostic methods “inspection, listening and smelling, inquiry and palpation” (望、聞、問、切). Based on syndrome differentiation of the fundamental CM theory, the CM practitioner will design a unique therapeutic proposal for the patient. Instead of focusing on symptoms only, the CM practitioner will consider the root causes of the disease, CM pathogenesis and the physique of the patient when making clinical decisions.

Clinical consultations between CM practitioners and western medicine (WM) doctors

In general, apart from some specific Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine programmes, the clinician responsible for the first consultation will be a CM practitioner. If the CM practitioner would recommend a patient for receiving WM service after consultation, a booking for WM consultation will be arranged for the patient. Similar arrangement will be made for inpatient services, where joint or sequential ward rounds of CM practitioners and WM doctors will be conducted as situation warrants. Depends on the clinical needs of patient and the decision of WM doctor, radio-diagnostic services, laboratory services and/or other clinical supporting services will be arranged for the patient. On completion of respective examination and professional reporting of special investigation results, the WM doctor will discuss the findings and result of overall clinical assessment with the CM practitioner with a view to establishing or refining the clinical management plan of the patient. The Clinical Management System of the CMH will allow access to full set of clinical information by both CM practitioners and WM doctors in charge.
