Chinese Medicine Clinical Services

The Chinese medicine hospital (CMH) will serve as the flagship Chinese medicine (CM) (中醫) institution leading the development of CM including Chinese medicines (中藥) in Hong Kong. It will be a change driver, promoting service development, education and training, innovation and research, and facilitating collaboration with both local and international parties. The CMH will execute and implement the Government’s policy on CM.

Through government subsidising defined CM services, the CMH will become an integral part of the healthcare system of Hong Kong. A comprehensive range of CM clinical and supporting services will be provided with details as follows:

Service scope

(1) Inpatient & Day-patient
(2) Outpatient
(3) Community Outreach Services

Service type

(1) Pure CM Services
  • Diagnosis and a variety of treatment methods are provided based on the traditional CM theory, to reflect the characteristics and advantages of traditional CM.
(2) Services with CM playing the predominant role
  • The attending CM practitioner will provide diagnosis and treatment. CM will be the dominant component of medical care, supported by western medicine (WM) at different stages where indicated and appropriate.
(3) Integrated Chinese-Western Medicine Services
  • To achieve the desired patient outcome when treating specific patient types or diseases, CM (playing the predominant role) and WM will be integrated into the care protocols.

Disease category

Services will cover episodic and chronic diseases, complex diseases, convalescence, rehabilitation, palliative care, health maintenance and preventive care and other disease categories.

Types of services not to be included in the CMH

To ensure that the CMH will develop along the CM predominant model, the accident and emergency services, general anaesthetic surgical services, intensive care services, child delivery services will not be available.
