Interventions

Chinese medicine (CM) practitioner will formulate the best suited treatment plan for the patient by choosing or combining different interventional measures based on the overall condition and needs of the patient.

Meridian theory (經絡學說) is an essential component of traditional CM theory which steers the development of acupuncture, Tui-na and other interventional measures. Meridians (經絡) connecting the Zang-fu (臟腑) and limbs are the routes for the circulation of Qi-xue (氣血) in the human body. They coordinate all parts of the body and maintain a balance between their functions and movement. Under the CM theory, obstruction of and the deficiency in Qi (氣) will lead to the development of diseases. By practising various CM interventional measures on patients, the Qi of Zang-fu can be regulated by giving stimulation to the meridians and a balanced condition of the body can be achieved.

Prescribing Chinese medicines (中藥) is the most common CM treatment. CM interventional measures to be provided in the Chinese medicine hospital (CMH) include:

(1) Acupuncture (針刺): a therapy of penetrating acupuncture needles into acupoints or specific parts of human body, following by the specific movements of needles to stimulate and regulate the Qi within meridians;
(2) Moxibustion (艾灸): a therapy that smolder moxa puff, pillars or sticks on a certain part of the body surface and give the body a warm stimulus to prevent and treat diseases;
(3) Cupping (拔罐): a therapy to put cups on human body and create air-tight suction; and
(4) Tui-na (推拿) and bone-setting (正骨): therapies to practise massage on patients strategically for a curative effect, to treat injuries in muscles and bones and to correct subluxation.

Other common CM interventional measures include:

(1) Fumigation (薰蒸) and bathe (浸浴): a therapy to fumigate and bathe the body parts with decocted herbal medicine soup (中藥湯劑); and
(2) Dressing application (中藥外敷): a therapy to apply the CM compounded preparation (中藥製劑) on specific acupoints or affected regions, such as San-fu-tian-jiu (三伏天灸), plasters for muscle and bone injury and the change of dressings in external medicine of CM.
